Rules We Brew By - Spark’s Always & Never List!

Spark Kombucha strives to celebrate and support healthy choices by offering a light, functional, all natural beverage choice and to do that we’ve got a few “rules” we like to follow when we brew. We always use natural, organic ingredients to flavour our kombucha, and we don’t add extra sugar, concentrates, or other additives. Read on to learn more about what we ALWAYS do and what we NEVER do when we brew. 

ALWAYS ORGANIC

You are what you eat and Spark Kombucha believes in serving only the very best bubbles with benefits!⁠⁠ That's why we choose to brew using only organic ingredients. By brewing with organic ingredients, we’re supporting healthy farmers, healthy consumers and a healthier planet - because organic agriculture feeds the earth, not just the consumer! 

While organic farming differs, they choose not to enhance crop growth with toxic chemicals and they replace key elements to the soil naturally after each harvest. Industrial farming on the other hand, uses pesticides and Agricultural Chemicals to intensify growth which exhausts nutrients from the soil, this requires increased amounts of fertilizers and additives year after year. It’s not an environmentally sustainable method of farming and it’s not an industry we choose to support with our kombucha brews.

ALWAYS NATURAL

We guarantee you'll be able to pronounce all of the ingredients in our kombucha - because all of them are natural and fresh. So when you’re drinking a bottle of Ginger Berry it was flavoured with real ginger pieces and a herbal infusion of dried, organic blueberries. Most of our kombucha is infused or cold brewed, meaning that we extract the flavour without needing any additional sweetening and we do not flavour with essential oils.

The artisanal brewing process of kombucha means that each sip comes packed with acids, bacteria and enzymes to help support microbiome and digestive health. Each flavour is naturally infused with organic botanicals, which means Spark Kombucha is naturally not so sweet, healthy AND delicious!⁠

At Spark Kombucha we also try our best to keep our ingredients, suppliers, and services local. Spark Kombucha is proudly handcrafted in Squamish, BC where we brew with our customers in mind, and hope to inspire more people to choose a healthy beverage that is simple, easy, and awesome tasting. Steeped in west coast culture, we aim to provide a modern, easy, everyday drinking kombucha, whether you’re cozy at home or out fueling your adventures.

NEVER EXTRA ADDED SUGAR

We start with less sugar and brew slightly longer, for a “not so sweet” and “not so sour” flavour that appeals to even newbie kombucha drinkers. You’ll only find 3g of sugar in a 250ml serving of our mainstay Spark Kombucha flavours, compared to the 30g+ you’ll consume in a can of pop – yikes! Though sugar is used to brew the kombucha tea, much of it is eaten up during fermentation. Post fermentation, we don’t add any stevia or sugar to flavour the kombucha. But, in the case of mango and tropical ginger, we do add mango nectar which naturally sweetens these flavours.

NEVER ADDED PRESERVATIVES

We use the terms “cultured” and “raw” and that's because our kombucha is literally alive and living with probiotics, a.k.a. Bubbles with Benefits! Raw kombucha, like Spark Kombucha, contains beneficial bacteria created during fermentation. That’s the good stuff which helps to support gut and digestive health. You’ll find the raw kombucha in the cooler section of the grocery store or cafes because the cool temperatures ensure the fermentation is under wraps; it’s basically asleep until it's time to drink up!⁠

Kombucha that doesn’t require refrigeration has typically been deliberately heated, or pasteurized, to kill all the bacteria and make it shelf-stable at room temperature. Then, additives and concentrates are used to bring back the flavours and allow for probiotic claims.

NEVER ADDED CONCENTRATES

Since 2015, Ellen (Spark’s founder and brew-master) has developed a unique, dry kombucha brew that she likes to call “an easy, everyday drinking kombucha”. Ellen’s time slinging kombucha at farmer’s markets helped her to perfect her flavour and style. From her customers' reactions, she refined her brew to create a kombucha that was dry, not so sweet, and not overly flavoured. From this base, she enjoys creating flavours with readily available and seasonal ingredients.


When it comes to selecting a healthy soda alternative we recommend keeping it REAL! Head to the fridge section and check out the ingredients (can you read them?), sugar content (is it low?) and see if you’re supporting a local beverage business (the chances are they will be sourcing their ingredients locally and supporting another small business too)! Quenching your thirst with an all natural and functional beverage is an easy way to keep your body hydrated and your insides happy and healthy while enjoying life in the Sea to Sky!
